At Kip McGrath Billericay & Wickford, we believe children thrive when they feel secure, supported and confident. We also believe parents deserve clear, accurate and honest guidance about what selective entrance exams genuinely involve.

Our Year 4 Mini-Mock assessments, delivered within our Kip McGrath centres, gently introduce pupils to the academic demands and assessment experience of the 11+, while giving parents realistic insight into expectations for highly competitive grammar schools.

This is not about pressure — but it is about clarity, preparation and informed decision-making.

Why start in Year 4?

Year 4 is the ideal stage for gentle but meaningful assessment:

  • children are developmentally ready for higher-level reading and reasoning
  • there is time to build skills steadily if the pathway is appropriate
  • decisions can be made without urgency or pressure

For some families, this brings reassurance. For others, it offers valuable realism. Both outcomes are positive when handled early and thoughtfully.

Understanding the reality of the 11+

The CSSE and FSCE exams are academically demanding and highly competitive.

For families considering Southend or Westcliff grammar schools, particularly out of catchment, the scores required for success are exceptionally high. Achievement depends on far more than familiarity with exam formats.

Pupils must demonstrate:

  • advanced reading comprehension
  • an exceptionally strong and precise vocabulary
  • mature mathematical reasoning
  • accuracy, focus and stamina under timed conditions

The FSCE, written specifically for Chelmsford County High School for Girls (CCHS), places particularly high demands on:

  • language comprehension
  • vocabulary breadth
  • speed and precision

Early, honest insight into these expectations allows families to plan calmly and responsibly, with the child’s wellbeing firmly at the centre.

Who are the Mini-Mocks for?

These assessments are suitable for:

  • Year 4 pupils considering CSSE or FSCE routes

They are not appropriate for every child, and we are always happy to discuss suitability openly.

What are the mini-mocks?

While delivered gently, the assessments do evaluate academic readiness in line with CSSE and FSCE requirements.

We focus on:

  • Reading comprehension, including inference and interpretation

  • Vocabulary knowledge and application

  • Mathematical reasoning and problem-solving

  • Accuracy, focus and working stamina

Success depends on strong literacy, depth of understanding and precise thinking — exactly as required in the real exams.

 

Clear, constructive feedback for parents

Following the mini-mocks, parents receive professional, easy-to-understand feedback, covering:

  • current academic strengths
  • areas requiring sustained development
  • the level of demand in the next stages
  • whether continued preparation towards CSSE or FSCE (including CCHS) appears realistic at this stage

Our feedback is always honest, measured and supportive.

What these assessments are (and are not)

They are:

They are not:

  • a guarantee of selective school entry
